Waylon and Ashley were recognized by State Representative William E. Sandifer III of Seneca, SC, during the luncheon. They were also welcomed to the Festival by US Congressman and FFA alumnus Gresham Barrett and State Senator and FFA alumnus Thomas Alexander.

The keynote speaker for the occasion was Michael J. Hayes, President and General Manager of WYFF-TV in Greenville, SC, who Waylon and Ashley had an opportunity to meet following the luncheon.

Later in the day, Waylon was one of the dignitaries to participate in the Festival Parade and rode in a Corvette driven by Mrs. Marla Thomas, mother of West Oak FFA President Alan Thomas. West Oak FFA Advisor Gwen McPhail coordinated the arrangements for Waylon to ride in the parade.

The Festival marks the beginning of the apple harvest season in Oconee County, the largest apple-producing area in the state, and provides the people of Westminster an opportunity to demonstrate the hospitality of Oconee County where all visitors are treated as special guests. The event continues to draw thousands to Westminster each year since the first one in 1961.
