Kallie Hilyard (left) and Noel Petit are congratulated by Bryan Armstrong, State FFA Vice President, following the
State FFA Awards and Recognition Program at Clemson University.

COLUMBIA, SC . . . Noel Petit, a student at Pickens Middle School last year, is the  State FFA Agri-Science Fair Winner for 2003, according to John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA Association.  The award was presented at the recent State FFA Convention at Clemson University.

Noel’s project was in the Zoology category and was titled “Through the Eyes of A Horse:  Can Horses See Color?”  She is the daughter of Dean and Tracy Petit of Pickens and will be a freshman at Pickens High School this year.

Kallie Hilyard, the Agri-Science Teacher at Pickens Middle School, is the Outstanding Agri-Science Teacher in South Carolina for 2003.  She was recognized at the recent State FFA Convention held at Clemson University.

“Ms. Hilyard was the first Agri-Science Teacher in Pickens County and she is doing an superb job”, Mr. Parris said.  “She developed the South Carolina Middle School Agriculture Curriculum”, he added.  By integrating science into the agricultural education program, Ms. Hilyard has observed that students enrolled in the Agri-Science course develop a greater interest in science and their grades often improve.

“To have the outstanding agri-science student and teacher in the state recognized the same year is a notable laurel to come to the Pickens Middle School”, Mr. Parris emphasized.

The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
