FFA SOILS TEAMS TAKE TOP STATE HONORS
COLUMBIA, SC……The Wagener-Salley FFA Soil Judging Team took first
place honors in the State FFA Soil Judging Finals held in
Orangeburg County recently, according to John W. Parris, State
Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA.
The Abbeville Team was state runner-up and the Latta Team placed third in the state competition.
Wagener-Salley team members Stephanie Carver, Chris Myers, Brian Gilbert and Courtney Williams won expense paid trips to compete in the National Soil Judging and Land Treatment Finals in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, next spring. Their advisor, Allen Williams, agricultural education teacher at Wagener-Salley High School, also won an expense paid trip to the national finals. Team member Chris Myers, high individual scorer in the state competition, was also awarded an expense paid trip to the 2004 National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY.
Abbeville FFA team members Luke Scroggs, Tyler Brown, Kurt Thompson and Brian Barnes along with their advisor, Fred Raines, agricultural education teacher at Abbeville High School, were awarded expense paid trips to Oklahoma City to compete in the national finals. Kurt Thompson tied for state runner-up as high individual scorer and was awarded a gold watch.
Latta team members Ethan Sansbury, Zach Hennen, Kelsey Guanciale and Jennifer Coleman were presented a plaque as the third place team in the state finals. Their advisor is Keith Cox, agricultural education teacher at Latta High School. Ethan Sansbury tied for state runner-up as high individual scorer and was awarded a gold watch.
The State Soil Judging Competition is sponsored by the SC FFA Association and co-sponsored by Duke Energy, SCANA, Progress Energy and the SC Conservation Districts Foundation.
Technical assistance is provided by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and administrative assistance is provided by Clemson University Agricultural Education staff.
“The Soil Judging competition is among the most comprehensive and scientifically challenging of all the career development events sponsored by the SC FFA Association each year”, Mr. Parris said.
