OKLAHOMA CITY, OK…..The Wagener-Salley High School and Abbeville High
School Future Farmers of America (FFA) Land Judging Teams will
compete in the National Land and Range Judging Finals in Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma, May 4-6, 2004, according to John W. Parris, State
Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA Association. “The
national educational competition emphasizes soil science, plant science,
land management and conservation,” he said.
FFA members qualify to participate in the national event by placing as the top teams in their home state competition. They match their skills in judging the adaptability of land for various purposes and uses such as farming and home site development. The competition involves principles essential in careers like environmental science, agricultural business, natural resource conservation and homebuilding.
The Wagener-Salley Team members are Stephanie Carver, Chris Myers, Brian Gilbert and Courtney Williams. They are coached by Allen Williams, Agricultural Education Teacher at Wagener-Salley High School.
Abbeville Team members are Kurt Thompson, Brian Barnes, Tyler Brown, Luke Scroggs and Eric Patterson. Their coach is Fred Raines, Agricultural Education Teacher at Abbeville High School.
South Carolina’s FFA Land Judging Teams are co-sponsored to the national finals by the SC FFA Association, the SC Conservation Districts Foundation, Duke Energy, Progress Energy, SCANA and local conservation districts, according to Parris.
The National event will conclude Thursday evening, May 6, with an awards ceremony in the Great Hall of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
