OKLAHOMA  CITY,  OK…..The Wagener-Salley  High  School   and  Abbeville   High  School  Future  Farmers  of  America  (FFA)  Land  Judging  Teams  will  compete  in  the  National  Land   and  Range  Judging  Finals in  Oklahoma   City,  Oklahoma,  May  4-6, 2004,  according  to  John  W.  Parris,  State  Director  of  Public  Affairs  with  the  SC  FFA  Association.   “The  national  educational  competition  emphasizes  soil  science,  plant  science,  land  management  and  conservation,”  he  said.

FFA   members  qualify  to  participate  in  the  national  event  by  placing  as  the  top  teams  in  their  home  state  competition.   They  match  their  skills  in  judging  the  adaptability  of  land  for  various  purposes  and  uses  such  as  farming  and  home  site  development.   The  competition  involves  principles essential  in  careers  like  environmental  science,  agricultural  business,  natural  resource  conservation  and  homebuilding.

The  Wagener-Salley  Team  members  are  Stephanie  Carver,  Chris  Myers,  Brian  Gilbert and Courtney  Williams.  They  are  coached  by  Allen Williams,  Agricultural  Education  Teacher  at  Wagener-Salley  High  School.

Abbeville  Team  members  are  Kurt  Thompson,  Brian  Barnes,  Tyler  Brown,    Luke  Scroggs  and  Eric  Patterson.   Their  coach  is   Fred  Raines,  Agricultural  Education  Teacher  at  Abbeville  High  School.

South  Carolina’s  FFA  Land  Judging  Teams are  co-sponsored  to  the  national  finals  by  the  SC  FFA  Association,   the  SC  Conservation Districts  Foundation,  Duke  Energy,  Progress  Energy,  SCANA  and  local  conservation  districts,  according  to  Parris.

The  National   event  will  conclude  Thursday  evening,  May  6,  with  an  awards  ceremony  in  the  Great  Hall  of  the   National  Cowboy  and  Western  Heritage  Museum  in  Oklahoma  City.
