A group of Aiken High School FFA members delivered a number of beautiful flowering plants they had grown to the Governor’s Mansion on March 26, 2004, according to John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA Association, who coordinated the presentation ceremony.
Some of the plants presented to the First Lady of South Carolina, Jenny Sanford, were geraniums, dragon wing begonias, petunias and Easter lilies.
Mrs. Sanford greeted the FFA members upon their arrival at the Mansion, posed for photographs and invited them into the Mansion for refreshments and a tour. “This was a great opportunity for us and a tremendous experience we will always remember”, said Joe Wilson, Horticulture Instructor at Aiken High School and the FFA Advisor. “It is truly an inspiration to know that some of the plants the students grew in our Horticulture Department greenhouses are at the Governor’s Mansion during the spring and summer”, he added.
The FFA members who attended the ceremony with Mr. Wilson were Lara Boyd, Brenda Castillo, Heather Masters and Justin Walters. Mrs. Sherrie Walters, a parent of one of the students, also attended.
The Aiken Horticulture Department will be contributing flowering plants for landscaping and beautifying the State Capitol grounds at a special ceremony in Columbia on April 21. This event is co-sponsored by the SC Agricultural Educators Association and the SC FFA Association. Wilson is President of the Agricultural Educators Association and a former Horticulture student and recent Aiken High School graduate, Bryan W. Lowman, is Vice President of the SC FFA Association. He is a freshman at Clemson University majoring in Horticulture with a 3.8 grade point ratio.
