The Calhoun Falls High School FFA Team took first place state honors in the South Carolina Envirothon held at Clemson University’s Sandhill Research and Education Center near Columbia, SC, May 7, 2004, according to John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA Association.
Team members Jonathan Dorn, Michael Burdette, Mathew Dorn, Rachel Brandt and Nicole Hall each won a $500 scholarship. Team Coach Calvert Sherard, Agricultural Education Teacher and FFA Advisor at Calhoun Falls High School, also won $500.
In addition to the scholarships, the team members and their advisor won expense-paid trips to compete in the International Canon-sponsored Envirothon July 26-August 1, 2004, at Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia.
The team also won the State FFA Division Competition in the Envirothon and were awarded expense-paid trips to the 2004 National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, along with their Advisor, where they will represent South Carolina in the National FFA Environmental Science Finals.
“This is a notable laurel to come to the Calhoun Falls FFA Chapter and South Carolina’s Agricultural and Natural Resources Education Program”, Mr. Parris said. “This achievement speaks volumes about the outstanding students who are members of the FFA in our state”, he added.
