B.J. SKELTON FFA MEMBERS RECOGNIZED

EASLEY, SC….The B.J. Skelton Career Center FFA Chapter held its annual Awards and Recognition Banquet Program at the Pickens First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs for Agricultural Education.

“Approximately 200 people including FFA members, State FFA officers, parents, school administrators and faculty, Clemson University Agricultural Education officials and other supporters attended the event”, Parris said.

State FFA Secretary Josh O’Rear of Aiken and an agriculture student at Clemson University, addressed the banquet program along with State FFA President Jamie Hughes, a member of the local chapter. State FFA Vice President Jennifer Perkins of Myrtle Beach and Clemson University also attended. Dominique Jones is President of the local chapter.

Pickens County School District Superintendent Dr. Mendel Stewart; Dr. Pernice Adams, Guidance Counselor at B. J. Skelton Career Center and Nancy McCannon, wife of Agricultural Education Teacher Steve McCannon, were awarded the prestigious Honorary FFA Chapter Degree for their outstanding support of the FFA and agricultural education.

Nolan Stewart was presented the Chapter Star Green Hand Award and named the Exemplary FFA Member. His supervised agricultural program includes his own herd of 20 brood cows. He also processes and markets hay to area cattle and horse farmers.

Other FFA members recognized included Maggie Haynie who was named the Outstanding FFA member in the Senior Class; Candus Shepard, the Outstanding FFA member in the 11th grade; Ali Datko, the Outstanding member in the 10 th grade and Caitin Raines, the Outstanding member in the 9 th grade.

FFA members who participated in Career Development Events at the Regional and State level were recognized including the Dairy Products Team, the Livestock Judging Team , Green Hand Knowledge Quiz Team, Parliamentary Procedure Team, FFA Creed Speaking Individual, Extemporaneous Speaking Individual, Soil Judging Team , Horse Judging Team, Tractor Operation Team and Tool Identification Team.

Additionally, 38 members received the coveted Green Hand Degree and 27 members received the prestigious Chapter Degree, the highest membership awards available at the local level.

“The B. J. Skelton FFA Chapter is recognized as one of seven Gold Emblem Chapters in South Carolina by the State FFA Association and received a National Two-Star Gold Emblem Award at the National FFA Convention in October 2004”, Mr. Parris added.

Agricultural Educators Steve McCannon, who is President-elect of the SC Agricultural Educators Association; David Jensen and Abbie Piotrowsky, Piedmont Region Vice President of the Agricultural Educators organization, serve as FFA chapter advisors at B.J. Skelton Career Center.

The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
