COLUMBIA, SC…The Carolina Forest FFA Tractor Operators Team from Myrtle Beach took first place honors in the State FFA-sponsored Finals in Columbia recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA Association.Team members Russ Boatwright , the High Individual Scorer in the state event; Marcus Causey, the Second High Scorer; Christian Draughn, the Third High Individual Scorer; and Mickey Fulmer successfully outscored teams from high schools throughout the state. They were coached by Harry Dubose, Agricultural and Horticulture Education Teacher and FFA Advisor at Carolina Forest along with Aaron Miles, a Clemson University senior majoring in Agricultural Education, who is practice teaching at Carolina Forest this semester under the supervision of Mr. Dubose.
“The purpose of the agricultural engineering-related competition is to provide students an opportunity to demonstrate their superb skill in operating a tractor while practicing appropriate safety precautions”, Parris said. “In today’s mechanized world, tractors are used significantly in agricultural, construction, commercial, residential and recreational businesses”, he added.
Teaching individuals of all ages to properly operate a tractor in a safe manner is a continuing challenge and opportunity for high school agricultural education departments throughout the state.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
