GLEASON NAMED SC AGRICULTURE SPOKESMAN
COLUMBIA,
SC….Alex D. Gleason of Calhoun Falls, an honor student at Erskine
College majoring in Biology, has been selected as Spokesperson
for South Carolina Agriculture by the SC Young Farmer and
Agribusiness Association, according to John W. Parris, State Director
of Public Affairs with the association.
Gleason will compete in the National Agriculture Spokesperson Finals at the National Young Farmer Education Association Conference in Orlando, Florida, December 9-12.
“As part of my responsibility as Spokesperson for South Carolina Agriculture, I plan to discuss FOOD SCIENCE AND NUTRITION”, Gleason said. “I will specifically address the problem of OBESITY which is approaching a national crisis in terms of related illnesses, deaths and economics,” he added.
“According to recent reports on the health of the US population, nearly two out of three adults and at least 15 percent of the children are overweight or obese. The estimated annual ‘price tag’ for obese-related illnesses exceeds 115 billion dollars”, Gleason emphasized.
Gleason says he intends to recommend that Agricultural Education Programs in secondary schools across America amend their curriculum to add courses in FOOD SCIENCE AND NUTRITION. He will also recommend that universities who prepare students for careers in agricultural education require courses on the subject to be certified to teach.
“I will also encourage the National FFA Organization and the National Young Farmer Education Association to increase their emphasis on healthy eating and physical exercise,” Gleason said.
As South Carolina’s Spokesperson for Agriculture, he has shared his interests in FOOD SCIENCE AND NUTRITION with Clemson University President James F. Barker; Dr. Calvin Schoulties, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences at Clemson; John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs, SC Young Farmer-Agribusiness Association; and Billy Keels, State Director of Agricultural Education with Clemson University.
While in high school, Gleason competed in the National Land Judging Finals in Oklahoma, the National Environmental and Natural Resources Career Development Event and the National Agricultural Issues Forum at National FFA Conventions in Louisville, Kentucky. He also attended a National FFA Leadership Conference in Washington, DC.
Gleason, who served as State Vice President of the SC FFA Association in 2003-04, spent the summer in Alaska where he worked in Agricultural Research. He is a member of the Crescent Young Farmer-Agribusiness Association.
His FFA Advisor is Calvert Sherard, Agricultural Education Teacher at Calhoun Falls High School.
