COLUMBIA, SC….Lexington Technology Center FFA members took top honors in the Christmas Tree Decorating competition held in conjunction with the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the SC Department of Agriculture at the State Fair Grounds in Columbia recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
The Lexington students used original ornaments made in class to decorate their tree. It was judged the first place winner by representatives of Columbia area news media. Twenty one high school FFA chapters from throughout the state participated in the tree decorating challenge. Other Lexington County FFA chapters participating in the competition were Pelion, Gilbert and Batesburg-Leesville.
Hugh Weathers, Interim State Commissioner of Agriculture, recognized Lexington FFA members Rebekah Roof, Jessica Hook, Preston Rikard and Jacob Powers for their superb efforts in the competition. Tommy Harmon, Horticulture teacher at the center, is the FFA chapter advisor.
Governor Mark Sanford addressed the opening session of the 125th Anniversary Celebration. Hundreds of South Carolina agriculturalists and others attended the one day event. Numerous exhibits filled the large room depicting the many programs of the SC Department of Agriculture. Modern and antique farm equipment on display helped set the tone for a successful event.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
