SC FFA MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN AGRI-TOURISM CONFERENCE

Twenty-nine (29) FFA members from the Abbeville, Aiken, Central, Laurens, McBee, Thurmond and Clemson University chapters attended an Agri-Tourism Conference hosted by the National Heritage Corridor Farmers Association at the National Wild Turkey Federation Headquarters in Edgefield, SC, May 11. Program topics included marketing, customer service, liability and insurance.

Blake Berry, Vice President of the Clemson Collegiate FFA Organization with Chris Fesko and Darla Simons, an officer of the Clemson Collegiate FFA.

The keynote speaker was Chris Fesko, a nationally known educator, farmer and entrepreneur from Skaneateles, New York. With a Masters Degree in Science Education, she gave up the classroom 12 years ago to start her mission of educating the non-farm public about agriculture via videos and her Discovery Center on their 1500 acre dairy farm. She shared some of her experiences and the “dos” and don’ts” of agri-education and entertainment.

Partners in this unique conference included the National Heritage Corridor, SC Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, SC Department of Agriculture, the SC Farm Bureau and the Old Ninety-Six District Commission.

Agricultural Education teachers who attended were Fred Raines, Joe Wilson, Ashli Young, Melanie Birchmore, Hugh Bland and Dan Henderson. Dr. Phil Fravel and Steve Sanderson, Associate Directors of Agricultural Education with Clemson University also attended. State FFA President Jamie Hughes and Secretary Josh O’Rear attended.

Arrangements for complimentary registration for the FFA members and Agricultural Educators was coordinated by John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA Association.
