WAGENER-SALLEY FFA TEAM TOPS IN LOWER STATE REGION

COLUMBIA, SC….The Wagener-Salley FFA Soil Judging Team took first place honors in the Lower State Region competition held in Orangeburg County recently, according to John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA Association.

Team members Andrew Shumpert, Wilson Allen, Austin Kirkland and R. J. Toole will compete in the State Soil Judging Finals in Edgefield County in November. Allen Williams, Agricultural Education Teacher at Wagener-Salley High School, is the team advisor.

Andrew Shumpert was the High Individual Scorer and Austin Kirkland was the Second High Individual Scorer in the regional competition. Aiken County Career Center Team member Derek Penvose was the Third High Individual Scorer.

The Aiken County Career Center Team placed second in the competition followed by Ridge Spring-Monetta, Aiken High School and Edisto High School Teams. All five team will compete in the State Finals.

FFA members who compete in Soil Judging match their skills in evaluating the adaptability of land for various uses such as farming and home-site development. The competition involves principles essential for careers in environmental science, agri-business, real estate marketing , homebuilding and natural resource conservation.
