YORK FFA SOILS TEAM TAKES TOP HONORS

 COLUMBIA, SC….The York FFA Soil Judging Team from the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center took first place honors in the recent Mid-State Region competition, according to John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA Association.

The York Team members are Whit Mitchell, Rebecca Keller, Samuel Hall and Drew Culp. Their advisor is Frank Sandifer, Agricultural Education Teacher at the technology center.

The FFA Soil Judging and Land Treatment Career Development Event was held in Fairfield County with teams from high schools throughout the mid-state area participating.

High Individual Scorers included Drew Culp, York, who was the high individual scorer followed by Justin Wright, Lexington Technology Center in second place and Parker Northrop and Kyle Harper of the Thurmond Career Center who tied for third place.

FFA members who compete in Soil Judging match their skills in evaluating the adaptability of land for various uses such as farming and home-site development. The competition involves principles essential in careers like environmental science, agri-business, real estate marketing, homebuilding and natural resource conservation.

The State FFA Soil Judging Finals will be held in November to determine which two teams will represent South Carolina in the National Finals to be held in Oklahoma next spring.
