COLUMBIA, SC….The Loris FFA Soil Judging Team took first place honors in the Pee Dee Region competition held in Florence County recently, according to John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA Association.
Team members Blake McCormick, Adam Gore, Caitlin Greeley and Derek Booth will compete in the State FFA Soil Judging Finals in Edgefield County in November. Nate Bellamy, Agricultural Education Teacher at Loris High School, is the team advisor.
Adam Gore was the High Individual Scorer. Blake McCormick was the Second High Individual Scorer and Derek Booth tied for Fourth High Individual Scorer in the competition. Grafton Cannon, a member of the Aynor Team, was the Third High Individual Scorer. The Aynor Team placed second in the competition and will participate in the State Finals along with Green Sea-Floyds, McBee and East Clarendon.
FFA members who compete in Soil Judging match their skills in evaluating the adaptability of land for various uses such as farming and home-site development. The competition involves principles essential in careers in environmental science, agri-business, real estate marketing, homebuilding and resource conservation.
