ABBEVILLE FFA TEAM TAKES TOP HONORS

COLUMBIA, SC…The Abbeville FFA Soil Judging Team took first place honors in the Piedmont Region competition held in Greenville County recently, according to John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs with the SC FFA Association.

Team members Tim Stanley, Jacob Laughlin, Jason Maddox, Joey Gilliam and Cliff Porter will compete in the State FFA Soil Judging Finals in Edgefield County in November. Fred Raines, Agricultural Education Teacher at Abbeville High School, is the team advisor.

Tim Stanley of Abbeville was the High Individual Scorer followed by Matthew Dorn, Second High Scorer from the Calhoun Falls Chapter, and Zack Snipes, Third High Scorer from the Belton-Honea Path FFA Chapter.

The Calhoun Falls Team placed second followed by the Belton-Honea Path Team placed which placed third. The West Oak Team placed fourth and the Dixie Team placed fifth in the multi-county competition. All five teams will participate in the State Finals..

The State Finals will be held in November to determine which two teams will represent South Carolina in the National Soil Judging Competition scheduled in Oklahoma next spring.

FFA members who compete in Soil Judging match their skills in evaluating the adaptability of land for various uses such as farming and home-site development. The competition involves principles essential in careers in environmental science, agri-business, real estate marketing, homebuilding and resource conservation.
