WAGENER-SALLEY FFA POULTRY TEAM TAKES TOP STATE HONORSCOLUMBIA, SC…The Wagener-Salley High School FFA Poultry Evaluation Team took first place honors in the State Finals held at the State Fair in Columbia recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
Team members Kristin Williams, Paige Dickson, Christopher Salley and Austin Kirkland along with Allen Williams, Agricultural Education teacher and FFA advisor, were awarded expense-paid trips to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, to compete in the National Poultry Evaluation Finals later this year. Austin Kirkland was the 4 th high individual scorer and Christopher Salley tied for sixth high individual scorer in the competition.
Abbeville High School Team members Shealyn Powell, Jacob Coursey, Casey Powell and Brianna Noblin were named the Runner-up Team in the State Finals. Brianna Noblin was the second high individual scorer and Shealyn Powell was the sixth high individual scorer in the state event. The Abbeville team was coached by Blake Berry, an Agricultural Education senior at Clemson University, who was practice teaching under the supervision of Fred Raines, Agricultural Education teacher and FFA advisor.
The Thurmond Technology Center Team made up of Justin Dooley, Corey Cartrett, Samuel Atkinson and Jason Henderson placed third in the state competition. Justin Dooley was the high individual scorer in the state finals. The team was coached by Dan Henderson, an Agricultural Education teacher and FFA advisor at the center.
A number of secondary school agricultural education departments include Poultry Science in their curriculum because of its importance to South Carolina’s overall economy,” Parris said. “ According to SC Agricultural Statistical Service Reports, broiler production is the number one agricultural commodity in the state accounting for 23 percent of the total farm income”, he added.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
