SC FFA OFFICERS PARTICIPATE IN FOOD EXPO

COLUMBIA, SC…. Jacob Powers, State FFA Vice President of Lexington and Emily Waggoner, State FFA Secretary of Pendleton, participated in “A South Carolina Taste” Expo held for members and staff of the South Carolina General Assembly on the State House Grounds in Columbia, April 5.

The purpose of the Expo was to acquaint state officials with the quality, diversity and economic importance of food products grown, processed and marketed in South Carolina. A number of venders prepared and served beef, pork, milk, ice cream, vegetables, barbeque, breads, spreads and specialty items such as quail and alligator.

The State FFA Officers had an opportunity to interact with state legislators and agricultural industry representatives. They were accompanied by William E. Keels, state director of Agricultural Education; Keith Cox, state FFA executive secretary, with Clemson University; and John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA Association.

A complimentary information display table was provided to the SC FFA by Kelly Smith, Executive Director of the S.C. Dairy Association.

The officers met a number of key state legislators including Senator Glenn F. McConnell, President Pro Tempore of the Senate; Senator Larry Grooms, Chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee; Senator David Thomas, Chairman of Palmetto Pride; Representative William D. Witherspoon, Chairman of the House Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs Committee; Senator Gerald Malloy of Hartsville. They also met State Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers and a number of leaders in the food industry in South Carolina.
