CLEMSON, SC…The Aiken High School FFA Chapter was named state winner in the Outstanding Community Service category for 2006 at the recent State FFA Convention held at Clemson University, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs for the SC FFA organization.
The Aiken chapter contributed 2235 pounds of produce from their garden to Golden Harvest Food Bank program in Aiken. The FFA members grew and wrapped numerous plants and baskets which were donated to 11 area nursing homes and other organizations. Members were actively involved in community service through the sales and service from the chapter greenhouse.
The chapter-sponsored Sunbelt Ag Expo/Okefenokee Swamp trip and other trips involved more than 75 percent of the FFA membership, Fifty percent of the members competed in Career Development Events above the chapter level
The Kio and Tilapia ponds, maintained by the FFA members, are a major attraction to the Aiken High School campus.
Aiken FFA Chapter President Lara Boyd and FFA Advisor Joe Wilson, Agricultural Education teacher, were presented the Governor’s Citation of Accomplishment by Larry Rogers, an official with the USDA Farm Service Agency which sponsors the National FFA Chapter Awards and Recognition Program.
Tom Walker, Executive Director of the SC Rural Rehabilitation Corporation, a co-sponsor of the program in South Carolina, presented the chapter a check for $1000 in recognition of their superb accomplishments.
The Aiken FFA Chapter will compete in the National FFA Chapter Recognition Finals at the National FFA Convention in October.
