CLEMSON, SC…The Carolina Forest High School FFA Chapter near Myrtle Beach was named state winner in the Outstanding Chapter category for 2006 at the recent State FFA Convention held at Clemson University, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA.
The Carolina Forest FFA membership has grown from 40 in 2001 when the Horticulture Science program was moved from the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology to 140 at the present time.
A major project of the chapter is the sponsorship of an annual Golf Tournament at the MyrtleWood Golf Club to generate funds for FFA member scholarships and chapter operations. There were 140 golfers from across the United States, Nova Scotia and Canada at this year’s event.
The Carolina Forest FFA Chapter is supported by the local golf and landscape industries along with Horry-Georgetown Technical College, Coastal Carolina University and Clemson University.
Carolina Forest High School has an agreement with Horry-Georgetown Technical College and Clemson University to provide for students enrolled in the Golf and Landscape program to begin earning up to six college credit hours while in high school.
Carolina Forest FFA Secretary Cameron Kessler and FFA Advisor Harry Dubose were presented the Governor’s Citation of Accomplishment by Larry Rogers, an official with the USDA Farm Service Agency which sponsors the National FFA Chapter Awards and Recognition Program.
Tom Walker, Executive Director of the SC Rural Rehabilitation Corporation, which is a co-sponsor of the program in South Carolina, presented the chapter a check for $1000 in recognition of their superb accomplishments.
The Carolina Forest FFA Chapter will compete in the National FFA Chapter Recognition Finals at the National FFA Convention in October.
