SC STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL FFA SCHOLARS
COLUMBIA, SC…Eight South Carolina students have been named National FFA Scholars by the National FFA Foundation, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
Matthew Dorn, a member of the Calhoun Falls High School FFA Chapter, was awarded a $1000 scholarship by BASF Agricultural Products. Matthew is a freshman at the College of Charleston majoring in Biology. His FFA advisor is Calvert Sherard, Agricultural Education Teacher at Calhoun Falls High School.
Ginger Givens, a member of the West Oak High School FFA Chapter, was awarded a $1000 scholarship by BASF Agricultural Products. Ginger is a freshman at Clemson University majoring in Biology. Her FFA Advisors are Stanley Gibson, Gwen McPhail and Krista Price, Agricultural Education Teachers at West Oak High School.
Brandi Laws, a member of the West Oak High School FFA Chapter, was awarded a $1000 scholarship by Dodge Trucks. Brandi is a freshman at Tri-County Technical College with plans to enroll at Clemson University where she will major in Forestry. Her FFA advisors are Stanley Gibson, Gwen McPhail and Kristi Price, Agricultural Education Teachers at West Oak High School.
Samuel Hall, a member of the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center FFA Chapter at York Comprehensive High School, was awarded a $1500 scholarship by the Monsanto Company and the National Association of Farm Broadcasters. Samuel is a freshman at Clemson University majoring in Agriculture. His FFA advisor is Frank Sandifer, Agricultural Education Teacher at the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center.
Rebecca Keller, a member of the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center FFA Chapter at York Comprehensive High School, was awarded a $1000 scholarship by Champion Laboratories, Inc. and Luber-finer. Rebecca is a freshman at York Technical College with plans to transfer to Clemson University where she will major in Agriculture. Her FFA advisor is Frank Sandifer, Agricultural Education Teacher at the York Technology Center.
Emily Nance, a member of the Floyd D. Blake Long, a member of the Clover High School FFA Chapter, was awarded a $1000 scholarship by Ford Trucks. Blake is a freshman at Clemson University where he is majoring in Animal and Pre-Veterinary Science. His FFA Advisor was Chris Edge, the former Agricultural Education Teacher at Clover High School. Carrie Bolin, the new Agricultural Education Teacher at Clover High School, is the present FFA advisor.
Emily Waggoner, a member of the Pendleton High School FFA Chapter, was awarded a $1300 scholarship by United Agri-Products. Emily is a sophomore at Clemson University where she is majoring in Animal and Pre-Veterinary Science. Her FFA advisor was Garrett Howard, a former Agricultural Education Teacher at Pendleton High School. Josh Murdock, the new Agricultural Education Teacher at Pendleton, is the FFA advisor.
“A number of corporations, organizations and individuals contribute more than $8 million to the National FFA Foundation annually of which more than $2 million is awarded as scholarships to outstanding FFA members throughout the nation,” Parris said. “Criteria used in the selection of scholarship recipients include academic achievement, ACT or SAT scores and class rank, leadership in the FFA and their Supervised Agricultural Education Experience Program,” he added.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
