LEXINGTON FFA SOIL JUDGING TEAM NAMED STATE CHAMPIONS
COLUMBIA, SC…The Lexington Technology Center FFA Soil Judging Team took first place honors in the state competition held in Anderson County recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
Team members Emily Ivey, Gerad Mintz, Will Amick and Patrick Williams along with their advisor, Tommy Harmon, Agricultural Science teacher at the Center, were awarded expense-paid trips to participate in the National Land and Range Judging Finals scheduled in Oklahoma, May 2-3, 2007. Emily Ivey was the second high scorer in the state-wide competition and received an engraved watch.
“Students who participate in the State FFA Soil Judging Competition, among the most difficult and competitive of all the FFA career development events, must match their skills in determining the adaptability of land for various purposes and uses such as farming and home site development,” Parris said. “The competition emphasizes principles essential for a career in environmental science, agri-business, real estate marketing, homebuilding and natural resource conservation”, he added.
The state competition is co-sponsored by SCANA, Inc., Duke Energy, Progress Energy, the SC Association of Conservation Districts and the SC Conservation Districts Foundation. The event is planned and conducted by soil scientists from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the private sector, and agricultural education administrative staff with Clemson University.
