BROOKS AND HENDERSON ADDRESS SPORTS TURF MANAGERS

COLUMBIA, SC…David Brooks, Agricultural Education Teacher at Hillcrest High School, Simpsonville, SC, and Dan Henderson, Agricultural Education Teacher at the Strom Thurmond Technology Center, Johnston, SC, were the featured speakers at the annual conference of the South Carolina Sports Turf Managers Association in Columbia, Tuesday, December 12, 2006, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.

Brooks, a graduate of Clemson University with a BS degree in Animal Science and a MS degree in Agricultural Education with emphasis on Turf Grass Management, began his teaching career at Hillcrest High School in l999. He started the Sports Turf Management program in 2000 with 16 students. The program has grown to 135 students each year.

Henderson, a 25 year veteran Agricultural Education Teacher, is a graduate of Clemson University with BS and MS degrees in Agricultural Education. His students maintain football, soccer, baseball and softball fields as well as two golf greens and ten plots of turf grass varieties.

The theme of the conference program was “High School Turf Management Programs…How To Get Young People Interested”.

Bruce Suddeth, Director of Landscape Services, University of South Carolina Upstate, Spartanburg, the outgoing president of the organization, presided at the conference. Clark Cox, Sports Turf Manager at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and a former state FFA officer in North Carolina, is the new president of the association and David Brooks was named president-elect of the organization.
