FFA MEMBERS ATTEND SC COOPERATIVE COUNCIL CONFERENCE

COLUMBIA, SC….FFA members from throughout the state attended and participated in the annual conference of the SC Cooperative Council held at the State Farm Bureau Headquarter Building in Cayce on Thursday, March 15.

State FFA President Amanda Hiott assisted with the opening session of the conference by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. State FFA Vice President Tyler Brown of Abbeville also attended.

Nolan Stewart, a member of the B.J. Skelton Career Center FFA Chapter in Easley, addressed the conference and expressed his appreciation for the Council’s sponsorship of the State FFA Star Farmer Award. He was accompanied to the conference by his parents, Ross and Norma Stewart of Easley.

Laurens FFA President William Nelson and Clover FFA Vice President Flint Holbrook reported on their participation in the Regional Cooperative Education Conference for Youth held at the North Carolina FFA Center near White Lake and the National Institute of Cooperative Education held at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania during the summer of 2006.

Clemson University Agricultural Education senior Kevin Sox of Lexington, president of the Clemson Collegiate FFA Organization in 2006, reported on the SC Cooperative Council’s Awareness Seminar held at the Madren Center on the Clemson University campus for Agricultural Education students last fall. The seminar was a special project of the Council in concert with the Agricultural Education Program at Clemson and held during National Cooperative Month observed in October.

Flint Holbrook of Clover was the recipient of Council’s Outstanding Youth Award which was presented by Marie Stiles, executive director of the Council. He was accompanied to the conference by his parents, Flint and Beverly Holbrook, and his brother, Nathan.

The McBee FFA Chapter was represented by President Kenneth Howle, Vice President Justin Hawksworth and Reporter Spencer McLeod.

Other FFA and Agricultural Education officials and guests introduced by John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA Association and a consultant to the Council, included Billy Keels, state director of Agricultural Education with Clemson University; Keith Cox, associate state director of Agricultural Education and Executive Secretary of the SC FFA with Clemson; Steve Sanderson, associate state director of Agricultural Education; Edsel Williams, a member of the National Council on Agricultural Education, and his wife, JoAnn, of Britton’s Neck; Frank R. Stover, Sr., executive director of the SC FFA Foundation, Pelion; Hugh McClimon, Anderson, chairman of the SC FFA Foundation; Earl Frick, Florence, secretary of the SC FFA Foundation; Steve McCannon, Chairman of the SC FFA Association Board of Directors and Agri-Science and Technology Instructor at B.J. Skelton Career Center in Easley; Carrie Bolin, FFA advisor and Agri-Science and Technology Instructor at Clover High School; Melanie Birchmore, FFA advisor and Agri-Science and Technology Instructor at Laurens District 55 School; retired Agricultural Educators Paul Jones of Roebuck and Jack Black of Greenville. Mr. Black served for a number of years as executive director of the SC Cooperative Council following his retirement from teaching.
