LAURENS FFA MEMBER AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP
COLUMBIA, SC…Kyle Balcombe, a 2006 graduate of Laurens District 55 High School and member of the Laurens FFA Chapter, has been named recipient of the Jack P. Corn Memorial Scholarship for 2007, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA association. The presentation of the scholarship was made by Mrs. Jane C. Corn, wife of the late Mr. Corn, at a recent ceremony in Laurens, SC.
Kyle is enrolled in the two-year Horticulture Technology Degree Program at Spartanburg Community College. He is the son of Michael and Cindy Balcombe of Fountain Inn, SC. His FFA advisor is Melanie Birchmore, Agri-Science and Technology Instructor at Laurens District 55 High School.
The agricultural scholarship is named in memory of Mr. Corn who retired as assistant principal of Laurens District 55 School where he had previously served as director of vocational education. A 1949 graduate of Clemson University, Mr. Corn began his professional career as a teacher of Agricultural Education and taught at Pacolet, Carolina, and Laurens High Schools, spanning a period of 23 years, before becoming an education administrator.
“A life member of the National FFA Alumni, Mr. Corn is remembered as one of South Carolina’s outstanding agricultural educators and FFA advisors in the twentieth century,” Mr. Parris said.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
