GILBERT FFA FORESTRY TEAM HEADED TO NATIONAL FINALS

COLUMBIA, SC….The Gilbert High School FFA Forestry Team took first place honors in the State FFA Forestry Competition held in Georgetown County recently, according to John W. Parris, spokesperson for the SC FFA organization.

Team members Paul Miller, Ricky Keisler, Bill Lander and Zach Hinton along with Derrick Cooper, Agricultural Education Instructor at Gilbert, were awarded expense-paid trips to the National FFA Convention to compete in the Forestry Finals set for Indianapolis, Indiana, this fall. Zach Hinton was the second high individual scorer in the overall competition.

The Wagener-Salley Team was named Runner-up in the state finals. Team members Brittany Hutto, Will Blackwell, Andrew Shumpert and Donald Jeffcoat were coached by Roman Fox of Batesburg-Leesville, a Clemson University senior majoring in Agricultural Education, who is practice teaching at Wagener-Salley High School under the supervision of Allen Williams, Agricultural Education Instructor. Andrew Shumpert was the third high individual scorer and William Blackwell was the fourth high individual scorer in the state finals.

The Strom Thurmond Technology Center Team placed third in the competition. Team members are Parker Northrop, Angel Henderson, Zach Rearden and Kyle Harper were coached by Hugh Bland, Agricultural Education Instructor at the Center.

Jonathan Gray, an FFA member at the Barnwell County Career Center, was the high individual scorer in the competition. His coach is Mindy Sandifer, Agricultural Education Instructor at the Center.

The Career Development Event is sponsored by the Horry-Georgetown Technical College Forestry Department and planned and conducted by Brian Clark, Academic Chair of the Forestry, Timber Harvesting and Horticulture Program; Jim Westerhold, Associate Professor for Wildlife Management; Marvin Cribb, Associate Professor of Timber Harvesting; and DeAnna Eddy, Associate Professor of Forestry. They were assisted by Steve Sanderson, Associate State Director of Agricultural Education with Clemson University, and State FFA Officers Amanda Hiott and Allen Wright.
