MIDDLE SCHOOL FFA TEAMS TAKE STATE HONORS

COLUMBIA, SC.....Dacusville Middle School FFA members Ashley Frady, Zena Bradshaw, Kaley Kerr and Ashley Waldrop took first place honors in the State FFA-sponsored Round Robin Competitive Event held at the State Fair in Columbia recently, according to John W. Parris, spokesperson for the SC FFA organization.

Zena Bradshaw was the high scorer in the state competition. Kaley Kerr and Ashley Waldrop tied for the second highest score in the overall competition. The team was also recognized for having the highest score in the Horticulture, Forestry and Agricultural Mechanics categories. Amy New, Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA advisor at Dacusville Middle School, coached the championship team.

The Pickens Middle School FFA team placed second in the state event. Team members R.J. Daugherty, Nicole Feria, Heateher Reece and Taylor Bowie were coached by Amy New who is also the Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA advisor at the school. The team was recognized for having the highest score in the Wildlife category.

Bowman Middle School Team members Stephen Johnson, Jacob Dewberry, Trevor Jones and Ebony Washington placed third in the event. They were coached by Eldon Kimmel, Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA advisor at the school.

The event, open to 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade students, consists of the identification of up to 20 trees by their leaves or photographs, identification of up to 20 animals by photos, track or pelt, 20 flowers by photo or bloom and 20 tools used in agricultural mechanization. A written test and an Agronomy Team event rounded out the competition.

The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
