Walker of Landrum, SC, Chairman of the House Education and Public Works Committee, addressed hundreds of FFA members from throughout South Carolina in Columbia recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA Association.

Chairman Walker addressed the first official Statewide FFA Week Observance Luncheon sponsored by the SC FFA Association and held at Seawell’s Restaurant adjacent the State Fair Grounds. In his remarks to the group, Representative Walker shared how meaningful and valuable his membership in the FFA had been to him and credited his participation in the organization for much of his success in life. He was a member of the FFA at Landrum High School in the 1960’s. While in high school, he was awarded an expense-paid trip to the National FFA Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri, as the Spartanburg County FFA Federation Public Speaking winner.

Representative Walker also presented an FFA Week Proclamation signed by Governor Mark Sanford to State FFA President Amanda Hiott of Barnwell, SC, a freshman at Clemson University majoring in Agricultural Education. The Governor’s Proclamation commended the FFA organization for encouraging its members to prepare for one of the more than 300 career opportunities in the science, business or technology of agriculture.

Other participants in the State FFA Program included State Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers; Dr. Alan Sams, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences at Clemson University; State Representative Marion Frye of Leesville, a subcommittee chairman of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee; National FFA Vice President Jennifer Himburg of Ariton, Alabama; and Christopher Bell, State Vice President of the North Carolina FFA Association.
