B.J. SKELTON FFA EQUINE TEAM HEADED TO NATIONAL FINALS

 COLUMBIA, SC….The B.J. Skelton Career Center FFA Equine Science Team took first place honors in the State Finals held at the Welcome Ranch near Williamston, SC, recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.

Team members Jordan Andrews, Julie Nowaczck, Kandace Smith and Tony LaBrecque along with Advisor Steve McCannon were awarded expense-paid trips by the SC FFA Foundation to participate in the National FFA Equine Judging Finals at the 2008 National FFA Convention set for Indianapolis, Indiana. Tony LaBrecque was the high individual scorer in the state competition. Caitlin Raines, president of the B.J. Skelton Career Center FFA Chapter and a member of the 2006 state champion Equine Science team, served as student coach for this team.

Laurens FFA members Tiffany Crowder, Aubrey Dixon, Alison Stokes and Candice Crane were named the State Runner-Up Equine Science Team. Melanie Birchmore, Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA Advisor at Laurens District 55 School, was the team coach.

Woodmont FFA members Kalan Winstead, Meghan Tague, Beth Harden and Kayla Ayers took Third Place honors in the state competition. Matt Rollins, an Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA Advisor at Woodmont High School, was the team coach.

Emily House, a member of the Mid-Carolina FFA Team was named the second high individual scorer and Merideth Walker, a member of the Union FFA Team, was the third high scorer in the state finals

“The Equine Science competition is among the most challenging of all the career development events sponsored by the SC FFA Association,” Mr. Parris said. “It is also one of the most popular of the competitions held at the state and national level,” he added.

The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through Agricultural Education.
