MANNING FFA PRESIDENT ADDRESSED NATIONAL CONVENTION EVENT

COLUMBIA, SC….Nate Lyles, president of the Manning High School FFA Chapter, addressed the National FFA Chapter Awards and Recognition Banquet held in conjunction with the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, October 24-27, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.

Nate shared the success story of the South Carolina FFA Association’s participation in the Million Cans of Food for the Hungry Challenge co-sponsored by the National FFA Alumni Organization and Toyota USA to the hundreds of FFA members from across the nation who attended the banquet. He was accompanied by FFA Advisor Michael Haynes, Agricultural Education Instructor at Manning High School.

He reported that FFA members from throughout South Carolina brought more than 3300 cans of nutritious food to the FFA Recognition Day at the State Fair on Wednesday, October 17, during World Hunger Relief Week.

The Manning chapter took top honors in the challenge by contributing approximately 1300 cans and was awarded a gift certificate from the National FFA Supply Service valued at $600 along with a scholarship for one of its members to attend the National FFA Leadership Conference in Washington, DC, next summer.

Nate also reported that two other chapters were awarded gift certificates valued at $500 and $400 respectively from the National FFA Supply Service. Additionally, two chapters were awarded scholarships for one of their members to attend the National FFA Leadership Conference.

The food was presented to Harvest Hope Food Bank headquartered in Columbia, SC, which distributes food to the less fortunate and homeless in a 20-county area of the midlands.

Scott Morfeld, an official with the National FFA Alumni Organization in Indianapolis, Indiana, attended the Presentation of Food Ceremony held on the State Fair Grounds. He was joined at the ceremony by representatives of Toyota USA, Harvest Hope Food Bank, the State FFA Officers, Clemson University Agricultural Education faculty and staff, Clemson University Collegiate FFA members, the director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization and other friends and supporters of the FFA.
