CLEMSON, SC….Jeffery Padgett of Pelion was named the State FFA Star Farmer for 2007 by the SC FFA Association during a special ceremony held at Clemson University recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
“This is the highest award presented by the State FFA Organization to an FFA member who is actively engaged in farming,” Parris said. “Only one student in South Carolina may receive this prestigious honor each year”, he added.
A 2007 graduate of Pelion High School where he served as president of the FFA chapter, Jeffery was recognized for his superb accomplishments as co-owner and operator of J and J Farms. He manages the beef cattle herd and more than 400 acres of row crops, small grain and hay. He is co-owner of 4 poultry houses and produces 480,000 broilers annually for Columbia Farms. He is also responsible for maintenance of all farm equipment. In his spare time, he assists with silage harvesting at Shumpert’s Dairy Farm.
As the State FFA Star Farmer, Jeffery was awarded an expense-paid trip to the National FFA Convention by the South Carolina Cooperative Council in concert with the South Carolina FFA Foundation. Marie Stiles, executive director of the Council, presented the award at Clemson.
Jeffery is the son of Jeff and Debbie Padgett of Pelion. His FFA advisor is Frank R. Stover, Jr., Agricultural Education Instructor at Pelion High School.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
