COLUMBIA, SC…The Pelion High School FFA Wildlife Management Team took first place honors in the state finals held at the Georgetown campus of horry-Georgetown Technical College recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
Team members Savanna Williams, Adam Christopher, James Shumpert and Brooke Whitaker along with their coach, Frank R. Stover, Jr., Agricultural Education Instructor at Pelion, were awarded expense paid trips to attend the 2008 National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Savanna Williams was awarded a $250 scholarship from the BASF Corporation as the high individual scorer and Adam Christopher was named the second individual scorer in the state competition. Macey Padgett and Ashley Bazemore served as team alternates.
Lexington Technology Center FFA members Dillin Price, Amanda Kyzer, Andrew Chandler and Timothy Roark were named the State Runner-up team. They were coached by Tommy Harmon, Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA Advisor at the center.
Anderson District I & II Technology Center team members Cameron Durham, Timothy Knauer, Savannah Zahnd and Crystal Keaton placed third in the state finals. They were coached by Audie Green, Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA Advisor at the center.
Angel Henderson, a member of the Strom Thurmond Technology Center team, was awarded a $250 scholarship as a high individual scorer in the state event. Her FFA Advisor is Hugh Bland, Agricultural Education Instructor at the center.
The State FFA Wildlife Management Career Development Event is sponsored and conducted by Horry-Georgetown Technical College along with the BASF Corporation and the Georgetown County Conservation District. Jim Westerhold, Associate Professor of Wildlife at the college, planned and coordinated the event with assistance from Clemson University Agricultural Education administrative staff and State FFA President Spencer McLeod and State Vice President William Nelson.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through Agricultural Education.
