COLUMBIA, SC…The Strom Thurmond Technology Center team took first place honors in the FFA Division of the State Envirothon held recently at the Sandhill Research and Education Center near Columbia, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
Team members Sam Northrop, Walt Morgan, Zach Rearden, Ryan Williams and Justin Padgett along with Hugh Bland, Agricultural Education Instructor and an FFA advisor at the center, were awarded expense-paid trips to the National FFA Convention by the South Carolina Soil and Water Conservation Society to compete in the National Environmental and Natural Resources Finals. This team also placed third in the overall Envirothon and each student received $125.

Another group of Calhoun Falls High School agricultural education students known as a Department of Natural Resources Team placed fourth in the overall Envirothon and each received $75 in cash. Members of this team were Hunter Cooper, Thomas Broome, Kelsey Powell, Samantha Coker and Chelsea Kidd. Both teams were coached by Calvert Sherard, Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA advisor at Calhoun Falls High School.
Loris High School team members Daniel Cooper, Jarrett Johnson, Adam Gore, William Hardee and Marcel Rossignol placed third in the FFA Division. They were coached by Nate Bellamy, Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA advisor at Loris High School.
The Envirothon is sponsored by the SC Department of Natural Resources, the SC Soil and Water Conservation Society, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the SC Forestry Commission, the SC Conservation Districts Association, the SC State Parks and the Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund. A number of Conservation Districts and individuals also contribute financially to the success of the event.
