GILBERT FFA CHAPTER PRESENTS AWARDS

The Gilbert High School FFA Chapter held its Awards and Recognition Banquet Program recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization. Kristen Miller, president of the Gilbert FFA Chapter, presided over the very successful event.

State FFA Secretary Hunter Cooper of Calhoun Falls was the keynote speaker. In his remarks, he challenged the students to take full advantage of the many opportunities available to them through the FFA as they prepare for college and one of the more than 300 careers in the science, business or technology of American agriculture.

Honorary Chapter Degrees were presented to Gilbert High School Principal Ann O’Cain, Wanda Barnes, Angie Keisler, Sherri Miller, Scooter Keisler, Steve Miller, and Odell Barnes.

First year Agricultural Education students Joseph Crim and Rachel Temple were recipients of the prestigious Star FFA Greenhand Award.

Ricky Keisler and Samantha Mack were recognized as the Outstanding FFA members at Gilbert High for 2008.

Austin Drafts was recognized as the high individual scorer in the State FFA Tractor Operation and Safety Career Development Event. He was awarded an expense-paid trip to the 2008 National FFA Convention to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana in October.

Nathan Price was recognized as the Mid State FFA Region Star in Agribusiness and will be in competition for the state award which will be announced at the State FFA Convention at Clemson in June.

Austin Drafts was High Scorer in State FFA Tractor Operators and Safety competition.

“FFA members Samantha Mack, Nathan Price, Michael Emmer and Zachary Taylor were recognized as the state champion Forestry Career Development team and awarded expense-paid trips to the National FFA Convention along with their coach, Derrick Cooper, Agricultural Education Instructor at Gilbert,” Parris said. “The team will represent South Carolina in the National FFA Forestry Finals,” he added.

New FFA officers elected for school year 2008-09 were: Ricky Keisler, president; Bailey Oliger, vice president; Shelby Townsend, secretary; Nathan Price, treasurer; Rachel Temple, Reporter; Zachary Keisler, sentinel; and Paul Miller, chaplain.

The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through Agricultural Education.
