COLUMBIA, SC…FFA member Lena Freeman, a senior at Union High School, was awarded a $2500 scholarship by the South Carolina Farm Bureau at the conclusion of the Junior Beef Cattle Show held in conjunction with the recent State Fair in Columbia.
Lena’s selection for the scholarship was based on a written examination, her demonstrated skill in showing beef cattle and overall knowledge of the beef industry,” said John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
Dr. Tom Dobbins, Program Coordinator of Agricultural Education at Clemson University and Superintendent of the Livestock Department at the State Fair, and Gary Goodman, General Manager of the State Fair, presented the scholarship to Lena on behalf of the SC Farm Bureau.
“One of South Carolina’s outstanding FFA members, Lena plans to attend Clemson University in 2009 to major in Animal Science,” Parris said.
She is the daughter of Steve and Patsy Freeman of Union. Her FFA advisors are Annette Vaughan and Cleveland Jackson, Agricultural Education instructors at the Union Career and Technology Center.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
