NELSON AWARDED CORN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

COLUMBIA, SC….Laurens FFA member William Nelson of Clinton has been named recipient of the Jack P. Corn Memorial Scholarship for 2008, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.. The presentation of the scholarship was made by John Corn, son of the late Mr. Corn, and Mrs. Jane C. Corn, wife of the late Mr. Corn, at the recent Laurens District 55 High School FFA Awards and Recognition Banquet.

A 2007 graduate of Laurens District 55 High School, William recently completed a one year term as vice president of the South Carolina FFA Association. He will be a sophomore at Clemson University this fall majoring in Agricultural Education. He is the son of James and Dawn Nelson of Clinton. His FFA advisor is Melanie Birchmore, Agricultural Education Instructor at Laurens District 55 High School.

The agricultural scholarship is named in memory of Mr. Corn who retired as assistant principal of Laurens High School where he had previously served as director of vocational education. A1949 graduate of Clemson University, Mr. Corn began his professional career as a teacher of Agricultural Education and taught at Pacolet, Carolina and Laurens High Schools, spanning a period of 23 years, before being named an education administrator.

“A life member of the National FFA Alumni, Mr. Corn was one of the outstanding agricultural educators and FFA advisors in South Carolina in the twentieth century,” Mr. Parris said.

The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through Agricultural Education.
