GILBERT FFA FORESTRY TEAM HEADED TO NATIONAL FINALS

COLUMBIA, SC….The Gilbert High School FFA Forestry Team took first place honors in the state finals held recently at the Georgetown campus of the Horry-Georgetown Technical College, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization. “This is the third consecutive year a Gilbert team has been named state champions in the competition,” Parris said.

Team members Nathan Harman, Magness Greenthaler, Henry Hutto and Jonathan Starnes along with coach Derrick Cooper, agriculture education instructor and FFA advisor at Gilbert High School, were awarded expense-paid trips to attend the 2009 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, where they will compete in the national finals. Team member Magness Greenthaler was the second place high scorer in the state event.

Anderson School District I & II Career and Technology Center FFA members Rachel Chandler, Lauren Rentz, Olivia Brown, Hunter Pearson and Quinn Hudson were named the Runner-up team in the state event. Quinn Hudson was the third high individual scorer. Their coach is Steve McGaha, agricultural education instructor and an FFA advisor at the center.

Strom Thurmond Technology Center team members Zach Rearden, Sam Adkinson, Josh Corley and Sam Northrop took third place honors in the state competition. Zach Rearden was the high individual scorer in the event. They were coached by Hugh Bland, agricultural education instructor and an FFA advisor at the center.

The State FFA Forestry Career Development Event is sponsored by the Horry- Georgetown Technical College and conducted by their forestry and wildlife faculty with assistance from Clemson University agricultural education administrative staff, state FFA officers and an agricultural education intern.

The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
