COLUMBIA, SC….The Abbeville High School FFA Dairy Foods team took first place honors in the state finals held in Columbia, SC, recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization. This is the second consecutive year an Abbeville team has taken top honors in this career development event.
Team members Chandler Saylors, Megan Sumner, Katherine Lawrence and Chesnese Gray along with Fred Raines, Agricultural Education instructor and FFA advisor at Abbeville High School, were awarded expense-paid trips to compete in the National Finals at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, later this year. Chesnee Gray was the high individual scorer followed by Katherine Lawrence in second place and Chandler Saylors in third place in the state event. Clemson University Agricultural Education senior, Amy Williams, who was practice teaching at Abbeville under the supervision of Mr. Raines, assisted in coaching the state champion team.
Lakewood High School FFA members Stephanie Hudson, Hannah Bradham, Holly Benenhaley and Kayce Gerecke took State Runner-up honors. They were coached by Jillian Lash, Agricultural Education instructor and FFA advisor at Lakewood.
Cheraw High School FFA members Bridgette Marsh, Aaron Lane, Paris Williams and Alexis O’Neal placed third in the state competition. They were coached by Robert Bollier, Agricultural Education instructor and FFA advisor at the school.
“The study of dairy products is a major part of the Food Science and Nutrition classes offered by some Agricultural Education departments in secondary schools in South Carolina,” Mr. Parris said. “The state competition is co-sponsored by the Clemson University Spring Dairy Show and the SC FFA Foundation,” he added.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through Agricultural Education.
