COLUMBIA, SC… .Dacusville Middle School FFA members Sarah Forest, Katie McConnell, Brittany Malone and Emily Hendrix took first place honors in the state FFA-sponsored Round Robin Competitive Event held in Columbia recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs for the SC FFA organization.
Team member Sarah Forest had the highest overall score including the top score in Tool Identification, Horticulture and the FFA Knowledge Exam. Emily Hendrix had the third highest over all score with the top score in Tool Identification, Horticulture and Forestry. Brittany Malone also had the highest overall score and the top score in Forestry, Wildlife, Horticulture and Tool Identification. Katie McConnell was the second highest scorer in the Tool Identification category.
Pickens Middle School students Levi Lance, Jessica Tarone, Kelly Welborn and Leanna Bearden took Runner-Up honors in the state finals.
The Round Robin competitive event is open to FFA members in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Both teams were coached by Amy New, Agricultural Education instructor and FFA advisor at Dacusville and Pickens Middle Schools.
“This is the third consecutive year a Dacusville Middle School team has taken top state honors in this challenging agricultural education event,” Mr. Parris said. “The event included the identification of 20 wildlife animals, 20 twenty tools, 20 trees and 20 twenty flowers, a general agriculture knowledge examination and memorizing the FFA creed,” he added.
The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through Agricultural Education.
