PELION FFA WILDLIFE TEAM TAKE TOP STATE HONORS

COLUMBIA, SC…The Pelion High School FFA Wildlife Managemen t Team took firs t place honors in the s tate finals held a t the Georgetown campus of Horry-Georgetown Technical College recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.

Team members Dakota Woodcock, Jeff Wise, Samantha Hinson and Becky Walker along with their coach, Frank R. Stover, Jr., agricultural education ins tructor at Pelion, will receive partial funding from Horry-Georgetown Technical College and the SC FFA Foundation to a tend the National FFA Convention later this year.

Abbeville FFA members Kristy Durham, Clay Hall, Brittany Sumner and Brianna Noblin were named the State Runner-Up team. They were coached by Fred Raines, agricultural education instructor at Abbeville High School. Clay Hall was the high scorer in the competition and Kristy Durham was the second high scorer. Each student was presented a rifle scope courtesy of Bass Pro.

Bel ton-Honea Path FFA members Brant Young, Tyler Ford, Carolyn Cruise and Elliot t Dunn placed third in the sta te finals. They were coached by Beth Ann Melton, a science teacher at the school. Glenn Stevens, agricultural educa tion instructor, is the FFA advisor. Each team member received an assortment of Game Mix Food Plot Seed, Deer Blind Covers and T-shirts.

The wildlife management career developmen t event was conduc ted by Horry-Georgetown Technical College faculty members Jim Westerhold, professor of wildlife management; Brian Clark, academic chair for Forestry and Wildlife Programs; and Bob Joyner, adjunct professor of wildlife management.

HGTC students Josh McIlvried, Chris Bolt, Alfred Burns, Hunter Evans, Trevor Carter, Eric DeLuca, Kyle Harper and Evan Sullivan assisted with the event. Steve Sanderson, Associate Director of Agricultural Education with Clemson University, and state FFA officers Adam Gore and Krista McCuen also assisted wi th the competition.

The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through Agricultural Education.
