COLUMBIA, SC…The Union Career and Technology Center FFA Equine Science Team took first place honors in the state finals held in Anderson County recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization. Team members Kristin Whitener, Hetti Millwood, Morgan Walker and Meredith Walker along with team coach Annette Vaughan, Agricultural Education instructor at the Center, were awarded expense-paid trips by the SC FFA Foundation to attend the 2010 National FFA Convention and compete in the National Equine Finals. Meredith Walker was the high individual scorer and Kristin Whitener was the runner-up high scorer in the state finals.
Travelers Rest High School FFA members Shelby Moody, Maggie Moody, Christian Chapman and Emily Moody took the Runner-Up Team honors. Shelby Moody was the third high scorer in the state finals. The team was coached by Jason Wigington, Agricultural Education instructor at the high school.
Woodmont High School team members Paige Burdette, Meghan Tague, Jordan Bryson and Desiree Agnes came in third in the state competition. They were coached by Matt Rollins, Agricultural Education instructor at the school.
“The Equine Science competition is among the most challenging of all the Career Development Events conducted by the SC FFA organization,” Parris said. “It is also one of the most popular of the Agri-science competitions held at the state or national level,” he added.
