YON IS STATE FFA STAR FARMER
COLUMBIA, SC…Sally Yon, a 2009 graduate of Ridge Spring-Monetta High School, was recently named the State Star Farmer by the SC FFA Association during a special ceremony at Clemson University, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
Marie Stiles, executive director of the SC Cooperative Council, presented Sally an engraved plaque and a check for $1200 to defray expenses for her and FFA advisor, Michael Crim, to attend the National FFA Convention later this year. Miriam Pflug, Marketing Manager with AgSouth ACA, Spartanburg, SC, serves as president of the council which has sponsored this prestigious award for a number of years.
Sally works on Yon Family Farms where she is part owner of over 1500 head of breeding beef cattle. She has significant responsibilities in her family’s registered Angus beef cattle operation, including registering and billing buyers at their two annual sales, and entering performance data in the computer. Other responsibilities include checking of groups of cattle, feeding her show string of beef cattle, assisting with hay production and harvesting, and marketing sweet corn at local farmers markets.
An active member of the Ridge Spring-Monetta FFA Chapter, Sally served as secretary, vice president and president of the chapter while in high school. She and her brother, Drake, were members of the 2008 state champion FFA Livestock Evaluation team and competed in the national finals during the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Sally is a recipient of a number of scholarships including the SC Farm Bureau-sponsored Junior Beef Cattle and Junior Swine scholarships presented at the SC State Fair. She has also been awarded one by the SC Young Farmer-Agribusiness Association and named a national FFA scholar.
The daughter of Kevin and Lydia Yon of Ridge Spring, SC, Sally will enroll at Clemson University this fall where she plans to major in Agricultural Education.
