STATE FFA OFFICERS ELECTED AT CLEMSON CONVENTION

CLEMSON, SC….Kerry Lee Cox, a 2009 honors graduate from Latta High School, was named president of the SC FFA Association at the annual state convention on the Clemson campus. An active member and officer of the Latta FFA Chapter, Kerry Lee was a member of the state champion FFA Farm Business Management team and competed in the FFA Creed speaking finals, the Greenhand Knowledge Bowl, Wildlife Management and Equine Science career development events. She was also state winner of the FFA Specialty Animal Production Proficiency Award. The daughter of Keith and Sheryl Cox of Latta, Kerry Lee will be attending Francis Marion University in the fall. Her FFA advisor is Aaron Miles, agricultural Education instructor at Latta High School.

Anna Kate Waters, a graduate of Westside High School in Anderson, was named secretary of the state organization. An active member of the Anderson FFA Chapter, Anna Kate has held an office in the agricultural education youth organization since the seventh grade. She is also an active member of the Anderson FFA Alumni Association. The daughter of Chris and Dawn Patterson, Anna Kate will attend Tri-County Technical College in the fall with plans to transfer to Clemson University to major in Agricultural Education and Communications. Her FFA advisors are Ashley Granata and Jay Copelan, agricultural education instructors at the Hanna-Westside campus.

Lena Freeman, a 2009 graduate of Union High School, was named state vice president of the association. An active member of the Union FFA Chapter, Lena grew up on her family-owned beef cattle and hay production farm. She was awarded a $2500 college scholarship by the SC Farm Bureau for her outstanding participation in the Junior Beef competition at the 2008 State Fair. The daughter of Steve and Patsy Freeman, Lena will attend Clemson University in the fall where she will major in Animal and Veterinary Science with an emphasis on Agribusiness. Her FFA advisors are Annette Vaughan and Cleveland Jackson, agricultural education instructors at the Union County Career and Technology Center.

Other vice presidents named include Kelsey Bridges, a rising senior at Clover High School. An active member and officer of the Clover FFA Chapter, Kelsey was a member of the 2008 State FFA Dairy Cattle Evaluation team where she was the high individual scorer. The team competed in the national finals during the National FFA Convention. She was also named runner-up in the State FFA Prepared Public Speaking finals this year. Kelsey is the daughter of Tom and Deborah Anderson of York. Her FFA advisor is Carrie Bolin, agricultural education instructor at Clover High School.

Gordon Best, a 2009 graduate of Loris High School, will also serve as vice president. An active member and officer of the Loris FFA Chapter, Gordon was member of the State Champion Soil Identification and Land Treatment team and competed in the national finals in Oklahoma earlier this year. He was also a member of the winning team in the FFA Division of the SC Envirothon and will represent South Carolina in the Environmental Science Career Development Event at the National FFA Convention this fall. The son of Gordon and Renee Best of Loris, Gordon will attend the Horry-Georgetown Technical College this fall. His FFA advisor is Nate Bellamy, agricultural education instructor at Loris High School.

Emmanuel Bankston, a 2009 graduate of Battery Creek High School in Beaufort, was aslo elected as vice president. An active member and president of the Beaufort-Jasper Academy for Career Excellence FFA chapter, Emmanuel is a recipient of prestigious DeKalb-sponsored FFA Agricultural Accomplishment Award, named state winner of the Forest Management and Products Award and serves as a SC Farm Bureau Youth Ambassador. The son of Willie and Carolyn Huff of Beaufort, he will enter Clemson University where he will major in Animal and Veterinary Science with emphasis on Animal Agribusiness. His FFA advisor is Robin Beasley, agricultural education instructor at the Academy.
