SC FFA CHAPTERS AWARDED PALMETTO PRIDE GRANTS
COLUMBIA, SC…Three South Carolina FFA chapters were awarded Challenge for the Environment grants by the Palmetto Pride organization at a recent ceremony in Columbia, SC, reports John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
Branchville FFA president Dakota Gray, vice president Benjamin Fogle and treasurer and student body president Shantel Bulter along with Pat Black, Agricultural Education instructor and FFA advisor, were presented a check by Linda Shadel, Director of Operations for Palmetto Pride. Mr. Black said the FFA members at Branchville plan to use the funds to beautify the school campus, the Branchville community and deliver the anti-litter message to the high school student body.
Pendleton FFA president Tessa Weatherly and vice president Troy Dobbins along with Agricultural Education instructor and FFA advisor Blake Berry received a check from Ms. Shadel. Ms. Harriett Smith, technology coach and public relations director at Pendleton High School, also attended the ceremony. Mr. Berry said the FFA members will use the funds to create a Carolina Fence Garden on the school grounds. The Fence incorporates both natural and cultural elements which have been designated as symbols of our state. It is a landscape component that can be adapted to a variety of settings and as a habitat device, has the ability to attract and support native animal species.
Green Sea-Floyds FFA officers Josh Collins, Ted Cox, Cody Strickland and Matthew Cooke along with Horticulture instructor and FFA advisor Lee Mayfield also received a grant which will be use to purchase River Birch trees to be planted in the school courtyard as a beautification project. Mr. Mayfield said the Landscape Technology class developed a plan which they will implement with assistance from the Nursery /Greenhouse/ Garden Center students. Plants grown in the Horticultural Department greenhouse will be added to the design to supplement the beautification project.
“The goals of the Palmetto Pride grants complement the mission of the FFA which is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through Agricultural Education,” Mr. Parris said.
