COLUMBIA, SC…Drake Yon, a member of the Ridge Spring-Monetta FFA Chapter, was awarded a $2500 college scholarship by the SC Farm Bureau Federation at the conclusion of the Junior Beef Cattle Show held in conjunction with the 2010 SC State Fair, reports John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.
“Drake’s selection for the scholarship was determined by a written examination on the beef industry, his beef animal showmanship skills and an interview with a beef cattle professional,” Mr. Parris said.
Roy Copelan, executive director of the SC Beef Council, presented the check to Drake on behalf of the SC Farm Bureau during an awards ceremony at the fair.
Drake, a freshman at Clemson University majoring in Agricultural Economics with a minor in Animal Science, is actively involved in his family’s purebred Angus beef cattle operation near Ridge Spring. He was named the Lower State Regional FFA Star Farmer earlier this year.
The son on Kevin and Lydia Yon of Ridge Spring, Drake’s FFA advisor is Michael Crim, Agricultural Education faculty member at Ridge Spring-Monetta High School.
