COLUMBIA, SC…The Pendleton High School FFA Chapter has achieved an all-time state record of championships in SC FFA-sponsored competitions held during the school year that just ended, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.

FFA teams in Floriculture, Landscape-Nursery, Livestock Evaluation and Poultry Evaluation took first place honors and will represent South Carolina in the national finals.

Additionally, three members took top state honors in individual competitions including Prepared Public Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking and Dairy Animal Showmanship. They will also represent the state in the national finals.

The teams and individuals were awarded expense-paid trips to the National FFA Convention by the SC FFA Foundation. The convention will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, in October.

Two Pendleton members were named state winners in FFA-sponsored Proficiency Awards will be in national competition.

The State Championship Floriculture team members are Katelyn McIntyre, high scorer in the state competition; Angel Woody, second high scorer; Talena Stewart and Mackenzie Mullikin. This team was coached by FFA Advisor Blake Berry.

The State Championship honors in the Landscape-Nursery competition was taken by Tessa Weatherly, high individual scorer; Troy Dobbins, third high scorer; Grant Dalton and Myron Hardin. These students were coached by FFA Advisor Josh Murdock.

Savanna Gambrell, Nick Garland and Lindsey Dobbins claimed the State Championship title in the Livestock Evaluation finals. Savanna Gambrell was the second high scorer in the state event. This team was coached by Mr. Berry.

In the Poultry Evaluation competition, Zac MacDougal, second high scorer; Weston Link, Amanda Hunteman and Emma Job took the State Championship honors. Mr. Berry coached this team also.

Troy Dobbins, the State Extemporaneous Speaking champion was coached by Mr. Murdock and McKenzie Mullikin, State Prepared Speaking Champion, was coached by Mr. Berry.

Mandy Martin was named State Champion in the Dairy Animal Showmanship finals. She was coached by Mr. Murdock.

Other state awards taken by Pendleton FFA members include Troy Dobbins being named State winner of the Dairy Cattle Proficiency Award and Lindsey Dobbins being named State winner of the Beef Cattle Entrepreneurship Proficiency award. Troy Dobbins and Tessa Weatherly were also awarded the State FFA Degree.

In addition to the state championship competitions, Pendleton FFA member Troy Dobbins was named the Piedmont Region Star Farmer; Mackenzie Mulliken was named Second Runner-Up in the Miss South Carolina FFA Pageant; FFA members Ryan Marcengill, Cody Stovall, Ryan Boggs and Austin Hix took Second Runner-Up honors in the State Agricultural Mechanics competition; Cody Stovall, Nick Garland and Matt Stallings took Second Runner-Up honors in the Piedmont Region Tool Identification finals; Angel Woody took first place honors in the Piedmont Region FFA Creed Speaking competition and participated in the state finals; and Clay Barnette claimed first place honors in the Piedmont Region Upper-Division Creed Speaking competition and participated in the state finals.

Other significant achievements of Pendleton FFA Chapter during the past school year are most impressive. The chapter was awarded its first State Palmetto Pride Environmental Grant to landscape the school grounds; received an Anderson County Farm Bureau Grant to develop an on-campus garden; sponsored a Voter Registration Campaign for high school seniors; and presented a framed copy of the original 1927 charter of the Pendleton Future Palmetto Farmer Chapter, a forerunner of the FFA organization, to the Pendleton Farmers Society to be permanently displayed in the historic Pendleton Farmers Hall.

“The fact that so many Pendleton FFA members will represent South Carolina in national finals at the National FFA Convention speaks volumes about the professionalism of Agricultural Educators Blake Berry and Josh Murdock and the quality of instruction they offer Pendleton High School students,” Mr. Parris said. “This record of achievement by the FFA members and instructors ranks among the great success stories of Agricultural Education at the state and national level over it 82-year history,” he added.
