AGRICULTURALISTS TO MEET IN HILTON HEAD
HILTON HEAD…..The annual state conference of the SC Young Farmer-Agribusiness Association will convene at the Westin Resort in Hilton Head, January 21-22, 2005, according to John F. McGee of Anderson, president of the organization.“A record breaking attendance of farmers, other agribusiness officials and agri-educators is expected for a special presentation featuring Teddy Gentry, nationally recognized producer of grass-fed beef cattle and owner of Bent Tree Farm and Cattle Company in Ft. Payne, Alabama”, McGee said. Gentry is the bass player for the musical group, ALABAMA.
University of Illinois specialist Bruce Wicks, Clemson University specialist Kenneth Backman and Darlington County Farmer Mitch Tyner will provide a workshop on Agri-tourism. They will discuss the economic benefits, marketing strategy and practical applications of this relatively new income producing concept for the family farm.
Another highlight of the conference will be a presentation on Farmland Protection by Gerry Cohn of the American Farmland Trust, Tony Cristitiello with the Beaufort County Rural and Critical Lands Program and Marvin Davant with the SC Conservation Bank.
Amanda McNulty with Clemson University Extension Service will present a special workshop on Creating Flower Centerpieces for the Home.
Kevin Keith with the National FFA Organization, will conduct a session for Agricultural Educators on Developing an FFA Program of Activities and preparing to compete in the National FFA Chapter Awards Program.
The Outstanding Farmer and the Outstanding Agribusiness in South Carolina will be recognized as will state champions in corn, soybean, cotton, small grain, and swine production. State winners in forestry, beef cattle, energy efficiency and farm shop development will also be honored.
The Outstanding Young Farmer-Agribusiness Advisor in the state will be awarded an expense-paid trip to the 2005 National Young Farmer Education Institute in Denver, Colorado.
