COLUMBIA, SC….Bo Norris of Society Hill has been named the State’s Outstanding Young Farmer by the South Carolina Young Farmer- Agribusiness Association, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the association.A member of the Antioch Young Farmer-Agribusiness Chapter, Mr. Norris farms a diversified operation of more than 1200 acres of row crops, cattle and timber. His row crops include cotton, corn, wheat, soybeans, oats and rye.
“The most significant technology change in row crop production in recent years is no-till farming”, Norris says. He has determined that strip-till works best in his operation and has resulted in the addition of an eight-row strip-till rig hooked to an eight-row planter. “I am amazed at the time savings realized by using this modern equipment,” he added.
With hopes of eventually increasing his farming operation to 3000 acres of row crops and hay, Mr. Norris also plans to produce stocker cattle and install an irrigation system since his brother, Patrick, has joined the business.
Although relatively new in the farming business, Mr. Norris serves as a director on the Chesterfield County Farm Bureau Board and as a member of the SC Farm Bureau Young Farmer and Rancher Committee.
Mr. Norris and his wife, Patti, were honored at the state conference of the South Carolina Young Farmer and Agribusiness Association in Hilton Head recently.
Don Boice, an official with the Pee Farm Credit Association, presented the prestigious award on behalf of the Farm Credit Associations in South Carolina who sponsors the recognition program in concert with the Young Farmer-Agribusiness group.
