COLUMBIA, SC…James Mangum of Pageland, SC, is the recipient of the Outstanding Agribusiness Award presented by the SC Young Farmer and Agribusiness Association, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs for the organization.
A member of the Central Young Farmer and Agribusiness Chapter, Mangum and his wife, Nancy, own and operate a successful retail produce market known as Jimmy’s Produce in Monroe, North Carolina. The environmentally controlled facility with a large cooler for produce storage is designed for operation throughout the year. As a result of the improvements to his market, Mangum says he is better able to serve his customers with quality produce.
He buys fresh produce from area farmers and the State Farmers Market. He also grows top quality vegetable plants on his farm and in his greenhouse for sale at the Monroe market.
Mangum has expanded his market to include candy, nuts, fruit baskets, wreaths, Christmas trees and smoked meats.
A former FFA chapter president at Central High School, Mangum attributes much of his success to his training in agricultural education.
Tim Maye and Ashli Young, agricultural education teachers at Central High, serve as advisors to the local Young Farmer and Agribusiness chapter.
