TAKES RECORD NUMBER OF STATE AWARDSCOLUMBIA, SC….The Crescent High School Young Farmer and Agribusiness Chapter took a record number of top awards at a recent state conference of adult agriculturalists held in Myrtle Beach, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs for agricultural education.
Jeremy HoltzclawJeremy Holtzclaw of Iva was reelected vice president of the State Young Farmer and Agribusiness Association for 2009.
The Crescent Chapter was named the Outstanding Young Farmer and Agribusiness program in the state and received a cash award sponsored by Southern States Agricultural Cooperative. The chapter was also recognized for having the largest increase in membership in the state for 2008 and received a cash award sponsored by Helena, Inc.
Tim Keown of Iva, an agricultural education instructor at Crescent, was named the Outstanding Young Farmer and Agribusiness Advisor in South Carolina sponsored by Learning Labs, Inc. He received a cash prize and an expense-paid trip to the National Young Farmer Educational Institute to be held in Mobile, Alabama, later this year.
Tim Keown Jeff Jones of Iva was named recipient of the State Agribusiness Award sponsored by the Pee Dee Federal Savings Bank of Marion and Mullins, SC, and received a cash prize. Mr. Jones is owner and operator of Jones and Sons Logging, Inc. He has diversified his business to include harvesting and marketing of hay and removal of chicken litter from production facilities in South Carolina and Georgia.
Iva resident William Bowman received the State Champion Beef Cattle Production award sponsored by Kuhn Farm Equipment and presented a cash prize.
Tim Kelly of Iva was named State Winner in the Energy Efficiency Program category and received a cash award from Duke Energy, SCANA, Inc., and Progress Energy.
Giles Earle of Starr was selected as the Outstanding Farmer in the Piedmont Region and was awarded a cash prize by the Farm Credit Associations of South Carolina.
Marty Watt of Iva was named State Runner-Up in the Horticulture category and received a cash award jointly sponsored by the SC Nursery-Landscape Association and Jaderloon.
John Davis of Iva was named the Outstanding Chapter President in the Piedmont Region and was presented a cash award by Massey Ferguson Company.
Brenda Earle of Starr was the recipient of an Outstanding Service Award sponsored by the SC Young Farmer and Agribusiness Association.
“This impressive record of achievement in agricultural education is a notable laurel to come to the Crescent chapter, the community and Anderson County,” Parris said.
